Professor Di Palma received a law degree
from University of Padua in 1956 and a Ph.D.
from UC Berkeley in 1967. His research interests
and course offerings cover Comparative Politics,
Democratic Theory, and Western and Southern European
Politics. His current interests focus on normative
and institutional issues in the development and
performance of American and Western European
democracies. Di Palma’s publications include
Apathy and Participation: Mass Politics in
Western Societies (Free Press, 1970), Surviving
Without Governing: The Italian Parties in
Parliament (UC Press, 1977), and To Craft
Democracies: An Essay on Democratic Transitions
(UC Press, 1990).
