2008 Political Science Commencement
VALEDICTORIAN

Each year, the Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science awards a graduating senior the Department Citation in recognition of his/her outstanding accomplishments in Political Science. This student delivers the valedictory address at Commencement.

We are pleased to announce that
MELISSA SAN MIGUEL
has been awarded the Department Citation for 2008.



Melissa San Miguel is a native of San Francisco. She served as Chapter Coordinator for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Berkeley Scholar Chapter through which she facilitated meetings on graduate school, internships and career options for Chapter members and held outreach activities both on-campus and at high schools for local youth. She also performed client-intake work in housing, employment and immigration law at La Raza Centro Legal, Inc. in San Francisco for low-income, largely Spanish-speaking clientele. Melissa was the recipient of the UC Berkeley Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship and was awarded the Student Life Advising Services/Educational Opportunity Program Student Life Achievement Award for academic achievement, leadership and service. Her academic interests include understanding political and economic inequality in the United States and Peru. After working for a few years, Melissa would like to pursue a degree in public policy and a Ph.D in political science.
