DEGREE LIST versus COMMENCEMENT LIST? The degree list and commencement list are two separate events. Read on to see which applies and when you need to add yourself to each list...
The degree list is how you officially signal the university that you are ready to graduate and are in the process of completing your final courses for your degree. In order to graduate, you must add yourself to the degree list by the beginning of the semester (the spring, summer, or fall) you expect to complete all of your graduation requirements (e.g., breadth, double major, minor). This is done through Tele-BEARS when you register for your final semester’s courses (or by L&S petition, once the semester begins). The commencement list is how you inform your department that you are planning to attend the department's commencement ceremony. Commencement is a celebration for you and your family at the completion (or near completion) of your college years. It is held only in May. All graduates of Summer and Fall 2007 as well as graduates of Spring, Summer and Fall 2008 are invited. The sign-up for commencement will be available through the PoliSci Commencement Website starting January 2008. Deadline: April 11, 2008. NOTE: Signing up for commencement does not put you on the degree list; nor does putting yourself on the degree list sign you up for commencement.
JANUARY - APRIL DEGREE CHECK Make sure you're completing all of your university, college, and major requirements. For a quick check, request a Degree Audit Report (DARSweb) through Bear Facts. Major requirements are not always well-reported by DARS, especially with courses taken off-campus. A meeting with Suzanne or Efrat in 296 Barrows is the authoritative "check" on your PoliSci requirements. For discrepancies regarding an L&S requirement (e.g., Breadth, Reading & Comp), please see an L&S adviser in 113 Campbell. DEGREE LIST There are three different degree dates: Spring, Summer, or Fall. When are you officially graduating? That will be the term in which you should join the Degree List. Finishing in SPRING 2008? Add yourself to the Spring 2008 degree list via Tele-BEARS by the beginning of the Spring semester. Verify your degree list status by checking your Personal Profile on Bear Facts or calling Info-BEARS at (510) 642-9400. If you are graduating and are not yet on the degree list, you'll need to file a "Petition to be Added to the Degree List" at 113 Campbell by March 14. After March 14, degree list adds require an extra step, so act early. You can remove yourself from the Degree List via L&S petition by the last day of the semester.
Finishing in SUMMER OR FALL 2008? Add yourself to the Summer or Fall 2008 degree list through Tele-BEARS (when registering for your summer or fall classes). Do NOT place yourself on the Spring degree list! NOTE: You can still sign up and attend the department's commencement ceremony.
COMMENCEMENT LIST Sign up through the PoliSci Commencement Website by Friday, APRIL 11, 2008 to receive two free commencement tickets and have your name printed in the program. The sign-up function will not be up for too long, so once it's up, sign up. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS for you and your guests: If you or your guests have a hearing loss that will require a Sign Language Interpreter or Real Time Captioner, please contact the department at polisci_commencement@lists.berkeley.edu by APRIL 11 to make the necessary arrangements. If any of your guests use a wheelchair or need to limit stair use, contact the department by MAY 12 to inquire about seating arrangements. If you yourself use a wheelchair or expect to be using crutches or a cane on Commencement Day, contact Suzanne or Efrat in 296 Barrows (or email psadvise@berkeley.edu) to arrange seating and plan your access to and from the stage. Advance notice is required to ensure the best possible arrangements.
