It is based on extensive archival work done in the US and Japan (made possible by a Fulbright fellowship). Her past interests & work include research on protest movements in Japan, the role of the judiciary in postwar Japan, and Meiji bureaucracy. The focus of her recent research centers on military occupations in a comparative framework, but also includes exploring the changing roles of Japanese women especially as Japan navigates the emerging stresses of the 21st century (e.g., issues of aging). Ryan's theoretical interests include democratization, civil society, gender, bureaucracy, and public administration.
